Predynastic Egypt

The significant Events, Achievements and People of Predynastic Egypt are as follows:

  • The notable rulers of Egypt were the mysterious 'Scorpion' and Narmer
  • King Scorpion of Upper Egypt conquered part of the Delta region
  • Discovery of a "Scorpion" tomb at Abydos. King Scorpion was believed to have ruled Upper Egypt and lived just before or during the rule of Narmer at Thinis
  • Egypt was undergoing the process of political unification. The Egyptian capital at the time was Thinis
  • The Thinite kings are buried at Abydos
  • The Egyptian people of this period adhered to the Horus cult

Predynastic Egypt - Dates and Time Period

The time period covering Predynastic Egypt is 5550 BC - 3050 BC. Between 5500 and 3100 BC, during Egypt's Predynastic Period, small settlements flourished along the Nile. By 3300 BC, just before the first Egyptian dynasty, Egypt was divided into two kingdoms, known as Upper Egypt (Ta Shemau) and Lower Egypt (Ta Mehu).
 

Predynastic Egypt - The Dynasties
Little is known about the dynasties spanning the Predynastic period.  This time is also referred to as Protodynastic Period of Egypt - Dynasty 0. The known names of the Pharaohs who ruled during these dynasties of the Predynastic period are detailed below.

  • Horus 'Scorpion' Pharoah
  • Horus Zekhen
  • Horus Ro
  • Horus Narmer "Catfish"

Predynastic Egypt
The period of Ancient Egypt history, which includes the period of Predynastic Egypt, stretches over 3000 years and encompasses hundreds of Pharaohs. Because of this massive time span and timeline Egyptologists have divided the different historical times into Periods, Kingdoms and Dynasties:

  • Definition of Kingdoms - Politically organized communities with a monarchical form of government headed by a King, Queen or Pharaoh
  • Definition of Dynasties - Egyptian dynasties were  families which retained political power across generations
  • Definition of Periods - A distinct evolutionary or developmental phase, such as the period of Predynastic Egypt
  • Definition of Intermediate Periods - The time between the end of an old period or kingdom to the start of a new period or Kingdom, allowing for possible anomalies in dates
